All Ireland glory for Elm Park and Warrenpoint

Elm Park won their first AIG Women’s Senior Foursomes All-Ireland title while Warrenpoint picked up their eighth AIG Barton Shield crown at Douglas on Friday.

In two deciders that went right down to the wire, it was the champions from Leinster South and Ulster South who were victorious.

Elm Park had booked their place in a final against Royal Tara, with wins over Royal Portrush and Tralee on Thursday.

Neither club had ever won the Women’s Senior Foursomes before, and it was Elm Park who secured the first point with Alice Spani Molella and Caoimhe O’Shea securing a 4&2 win over Sophie Sharp and Judith Giles.

Royal Tara hit right back when Ann Gorman and Maura Madden secured a precious 3&2 victory against Kate Fleming and Michele Butler.

That meant it all hinged on the middle match with the pair of Sarah O’Brien and Siobhan O’Shea on target for a 2up win, at the expense of Niamh Carroll and Angela Reilly.

And Elm Park captain Clodagh O’Donnell was thrilled with her side’s composure right until the very end.

“The adrenaline is going so much,” said O’Donnell.

“I am so thrilled for this wonderful bunch of young women, who have brought home this pennant.

“To get to an All-Ireland final in Elm Park’s centenary year, this is the first time we have ever been in a Senior Foursomes final, and to win it is magnificent.

“14 players in total got us this far, we had ten of them playing over the last two days. They have just delivered with such style, such tenacity, it’s wonderful. It’s been a pleasure to work with them.

“Naturally we are all delighted we are victorious. Some of these girls are out tomorrow again in the Senior Cup finals. We wish them all the best and we hope we are celebrating again with them on Sunday.”

The AIG Women’s and Men’s Senior Cups take centre stage at Douglas tomorrow, and it was Warrenpoint who picked up the second All-Ireland title on offer this weekend.

They defeated Muskerry in their quarter-final before a win against County Louth in the semi-finals, and on Friday the club who went back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, were up against Grange.

The experienced duo of Colm Campbell (now a five time Barton Shield winner) and Rian Carvill secured victory with a par on 17 that gave Warrenpoint a three-hole aggregate win.

It’s absolutely fabulous. We’re delighted we came down, our intention was to try and win the Barton Shield again, our last time was 2017,” said Warrenpoint Captain Peter Kenny.

“We were cruising at one stage, through 12, 13 holes we were five holes up. We’re all thinking we need to hang on in there but Barton Shield can turn very quick, you can lose two holes at a time and that’s exactly what happened.

“The guys got within two holes of us and we sunk two very important putts on 17 for pars which gave us a wee bit of leeway going to the last two holes.

“That was crucial to get us over the line.”
