Wallace lurking; amateurs shine at Malahide; Warrenpoint and Elm Park win

Defending Omega European Masters champion Matt Wallace is giving Ryder Cup skipper Luke Donald food for thought before he names his six wildcards on Monday.

While he considers his chances slim, the Englishman shot rounds of 65 and 63 on a marathon day as officials play catch-up following Thursday’s fog delays.

At 13-under, Wallace is just a shot behind leader Adrien Saddier of France in Crans Montana, while potential pick Marco Penge was 23rd on four under alongside wildcard favourite Matt Fitzpatrick, one of 54 players unable to start round two.

In Sweden, there was no joy for the six-strong Irish challenge in the HotelPlanner Tour’s Dormy Open, where Amgen Irish Open-bound Mark Power shot a brilliant, six-under 65 but agonisingly missed the five-under cut by one stroke.

In the LET Access Series’s inaugural Women’s Irish Challenge at Malahide, overnight leader Anne-Charlotte Mora kept her cool to secure a four-stroke victory.

The French star closed with a three-under 69 to win on 10-under from Germany’s Verena Gimmy as Elm Park amateur Emma Fleming shot 72 and Olivia Mehaffey a 74 to finish joint 12th on two over.

Amateurs Roisin Scanlon with a 73 and Lahinch’s Aine Donegan with a fine 71 were 22nd on four over, while rookie Canice Screene finished 40th on eight over after a 75.

Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley, meanwhile, will tee it up in October’s Second Stage of the DP World Tour Q-School after cruising through the First Stage in Bristol.

The Dubliner (28) added a one-over 71 to rounds of 70, 72 and 70 at The Players Club to finish tied for fifth on three over as 19 players progressed on six over or better.

Stephen Coulter and Vincy Toner defeated Jonathan O’Driscoll and Dylan Harbourne 1-up as Colm Campbell Jnr and Rian Carvill beat Jake Whelan and Ciaran Murphy 2-up to deny the Rathfarnham club their first Barton Shield All-Ireland.

“We were cruising at one stage, through 12, 13 holes we were five holes up,” said a delighted winning captain, Peter Kenny. “We’re all thinking we need to hang on in there, but Barton Shield can turn very quickly, you can lose two holes at a time, and that’s exactly what happened.”

In the AIG Women’s Foursomes, Elm Park edged out Royal Tara 2-1 to win the title for the first time in the club’s centenary year.

“To get to an All-Ireland final in Elm Park’s centenary year, this is the first time we have ever been in a Senior Foursomes final, and to win it is magnificent,” said Elm Park captain Clodagh O’Donnell.
