Grehan leads ‘Close’ by three after nine-birdie 65 at Westport

Stuart Grehan made nine birdies in an eight under 63 to take a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the AIG Irish Amateur Close Championship at Westport.

The reigning Irish Amateur Open champion birdied the first four holes and added further birdies at the seventh, ninth, 10th, 15th and 18th with his lone bogey coming at the eighth.

Tralee’s Mark Gazi made six birdies in a 68 to sit alone in second while West of Ireland champion Dylan Holmes was in a eight-way tie for third on three under.

Defending champion Thomas Abom shot 71 to share 11th on a day when 21 players broke par.
