Kinsale's Cathal Butler came from seven shots behind in the final round to tie with 54-hole lead Gary O'Flaherty and then beat him in sudden death to take the Munster Stroke Play Championship at Cork.

The former Irish Boys international, who broke his wrist eight months ago, was outside the top 10 on five over par after a third round 73.

But the Paddy Harrington Scholarship student at Maynooth University scorched through the field with a closing 69 giving him the clubhouse lead on two over par 290.

O'Flaherty post a 71 in the morning to lead by two shots on two under 214 from fellow Cork clubman John Hickey with Joe Lyons third on 219.

But O'Flaherty posted a 76 in the afternoon and ended up in a playoff with Butler, who made a par-four at the second extra hole, the 17th, to win the title.

O'Flaherty missed the green right and failed to save par from 12 feet as Butler rolled his 10 foot birdie putt close and tapped in for victory.

Carlow's John Greene, who has been showing glimpses of his 2010 South of Ireland winning form in recent weeks, completed the podium with a closing 70 giving him third place, one stroke outside the playoff on three over 291.
