Lloyd SaltmanThe efforts of the Irish contingent were completely overshadowed by the Saltman bothers, Lloyd and Elliot, following the opening round of the Hi5 Pro Tour’s Hacienda del Alamo Open. (Live scoring)

While Lloyd opened with a seven under par 65 to take the lead, the presence of Elliot caused a stir in media circles back home following the European Tour’s decision two weeks ago to hand him a three-month ban for cheating in a Challenge Tour event last year.

Elliot Saltman plans to appeal the decision and while his opening 73 left him well down the field, he has been widely criticised for teeing it up while banned by the European Tour.

However, the Hi5 Pro Tour is not affiliated to or controlled by the European Tour, which means that he is entitled to tee it up. Should he wish to play on the Europro Tour or the Alps Tour, which offer Challenge Tour cards to the top five money winners, he might find himself out in the cold.

Clandeboye’s Jonnie Caldwell opened with a one under par 71 with Gareth Shaw (72), Dara Lernihan (73), Cian Curley (75) and Neil O’Briain (80) and Dermot O’Neill (81) the other Irish in action.
