Seamus Power may need to shoot 60 today to break into the top 125 in the FedExCup standings at the Wyndham Championship and lock up his PGA Tour card.

The West Waterford Golf Club favourite went into the third round tied for 27th in his quest for the top-five finish he needs to avoid the Korn Ferry Finals over the next three weeks.

But after playing his first 11 holes in three under, he double-bogeyed the par-three 12th, drove out of bounds and did well to get up and down from 70 yards for a bogey at the par-five 15th, then bogeyed the last.

A one-over 71 left Power tied for 55th on six-under, eight strokes outside the top-five finish he needs to move from 144th into the FedExCup standings into the top 125. Scores

He was projected to move up just two places to 142nd, and with the field averaging 68 yesterday, it's likely he'll need to shoot at least 60 to have a chance of that top-five finish.

Byeong Hun An shot a third-round 66 to lead on 17-under in his quest for a maiden win.

But he's just one shot clear of Webb Simpson and Brice Garnett on 17-under with Ryan Palmer on 15 under and the Norwegian star Viktor Hovland tied for fifth with JT Poston and Paul Casey, just three behind.

Just eight players shot a higher round than Power, and seven of them missed the 54-hole cut.

The most prominent victim was three-time major winner Jordan Spieth, whose putting could not save him as he shot 77.

The Texan found just four fairways and had 32 putts.

Many are looking to see if Hovland (21) can win finish in a two-way tie for second or better and earn his PGA Tour stripes.

With Matthew Wolff and Collin Morikawa winning in their third and sixth starts as professionals, Hovland has a chance to join them on tour and avoid the Korn Ferry Finals over the next three weeks.
