Sacré bleu — scorching 65 puts Penadaries five clear in Irish Boys

He might only be 16th in the French Boys Order of Merit but Adrien Penadaries showed the field a clean pair of heels in round three of the Irish Boys Amateur Open in Tuam.

The 16-year old Parisian, a member of the elite French “Pôles Espoirs” golf system, fired an eagle at the third and added five birdies in a course record seven under par 65.

The Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche player, a son of former Challenge Tour winner Marc Pendaries, leads by fives strokes on four under 212 from New Ross’ Michael Ryan, who had five birdies and a double bogey in a three under 69 to get to one over.

Penadaries' round, which also featured birdies at the eighth, 10th, 12th, 14th and 17th, was all the more remarkable for the fact that it was one of just three sub-par scores registered on Thursday.

After Ryan’s 69, the only other player to break par was Carton House’s Bill Hannon, who shot a 70 but missed the 18 over par cut of 234 by a single stroke.

England’s Gian-Marco Petrozzi and Westport’s Harry Gillivan shot 75s to share third place on three over par 219 with overnight leader Barry Fitzpatrick back in 15th on nine over after an 84.
