Killarney's Mairead Martin is the leading Irish player heading into Sunday's final round of the Irish Under 18 Girls Open Strokeplay Championship at Roganstown.

As Austria's Isabella Holpfer fired rounds of 73 and 71 to lead the 72-strong field by two shots on two over par 144, Martin made four birdies in a one under 70 in the afternoon to share second spot with Swedish trio Ebba Bjornberg, Pi-Lillebi Hermansson and Elsa Lundquist and English challenger Samantha Fuller.

Live scoring

While 38 players carded scores in the 70’s during the first round, lower scores prevailed in the second round with 42 players shooting in the 70’s.

Seeking a hat-trick of wins, defending champion Olivia Mehaffey from Royal County Down Ladies and Shannon McWilliam (Scotland) carded the two best opening first round scores of one over par,72.

However the leaderboard changed significantly at the end of round two with all players vying for a place in the top 50.

The wind died down, making birdies and low scores a little more achievable and both Martin and Bjornberg took advantage, carding four birdies  apiece for one-under par 70s as Mehaffey shot 75 and Hermitage's Ciara Casey added a 74 to her opening 73 to lie just three shots behind Holpfer on five over 147.
