Rory McIlroy won the 2005 Irish Close Championship at Westport. But can he win the Masters?

Rory McIlroy is the 7/1 favourite to win the Masters Tournament with Paddy Power — short odds for a man who has yet to finish in the top ten at Augusta National.

Whatever about the Co Down man’s chances — let’s not forget that he had a four-shot lead with a round to go in 2011 — Westport Golf Club is sticking its neck out and offering “free golf” if he manages to pull on that green jacket on April 13.

The Co Mayo club was the scene of McIlroy’s 2005 Irish Amateur Close victory over Eddie McCormack and to celebrate the launch of its new website — www.westportgolfclub.ie — and its recognition as Connacht’s Best Parkland Course for 2014 by the ‘Golfers Guide to Ireland’, the marketing gurus there have come up with a “Masters Madness” offer - free golf if Rory wins the Masters.

The club will offer a free green fee to anyone who has prepaid for a round through the club’s website and plays between now and Masters’ Sunday this year.
