The Malahide man, who was just a shot off the lead after an opening 69, complained of back problems after he opened with a double bogey six at the first and then bogeyed the second.

“Struggled with back problems today but seems ok now, going to rip it up tomorrow!” he said on Twitter.

While he birdied the fourth, he followed that with 13 straight pars before closing with a bogey for a three over 74 that left him tied for 23rd on one over par, seven shots behind leaders Gary Wolstenholme and Paul Wesselingh.

Former amateur great Wolstenholme fired a five under par 66 to lead on six under alongside compatriot Wesselingh (68).

Australia’s Mike Harwood, a five time winner on The European Tour, looked to be putting the best round of the day together having reached the 16th tee at six under par, but successive bogeys at the final two par fours mean he will have to make do with a three-way tie for third place alongside Paraguay’s Angel Franco and Spain’s Juan Quiros – who both shot rounds of 68 – one shot back going into Sunday.

Des Smyth carded a second successive 74 to share 44th on six over with Eamonn Darcy a shot further back after a 75.
