Power goes bogey-free for first time in six months

Séamus Power shot his first bogey-free round for six months to cruise into the weekend in the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook.

The West Waterford man went into the second round a shot outside the projected cut mark after opening with a one-over 72 at the testing Copperhead Course on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

But he produced his best scrambling performance of the season yesterday, getting up and down eight times out of eight for pars to sign for a three-under 68 that left him seven shots behind halfway leader Sunjae Im on two-under.

It was a timely round for the Tooraneena man (39), whose main goal this season is to make the top 100 in the FedExCup, who will be exempt in 2027.

He entered the week ranked 91st after playing all four rounds in The Players and went bogey-free for the first time since last September’s Procore Championship.

Not only did he birdie the eighth, 12th and 13th, he also saved pars at the third, fourth, sixth, 11th, 15th, 16th and 17th to be ranked inside the top five around the greens

He has his work cut out to challenge for a third PGA TOUR win that would transform his season after Lipsky added a 65 to his opening 69 to lead on eight-under.

Power the best of the Irish in India

On the HotelPlanner Tour, Mark Power’s five under 67 left him tied for 12th at halfway when the second round was completed early today in the DP World Tour PGTI Open in India.

He was five shots behind MJ Dafue of South Africa, who carded a course record 61 at Classic Golf and Country Club near New Delhi, and India’s Rashid Khan.

Gary Hurley was 25th on six under after a 70, while Conor Purcell completed his last three holes in one under this morning to shoot 73 and make the cut on the four-under limit.

On the DP World Tour, American Jordan Gumberg took a two-stroke lead into the weekend at the Hainan Classic at Mission Hills Haikou.

He made seven birdies in a six-under 66 to lead on 14-under from Spain’s Jorge Campillo.

As the Masters approaches, Bryson DeChambeau looks to be building a head of steam as he chases back-to-back LIV Golf wins in Johannesburg.

A six under 65 left the Californian, who won in Singapore last week, two strokes clear of Spain’s David Puig and South Africa’s Branden Grace on 14-under at The Club at Steyn City.

Tom McKibbin was tied 44th on two under after a 72, while Graeme McDowell’s 74 left him joint 54th in the 57-man field on two over.
