McKibbin sixth as McMahon wins Lytham Trophy

Holywood’s Tom McKibbin continued his hot streak of form when he finished an impressive tied sixth behind Wallasey’s Joshua McMahon in the Lytham Trophy at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
After back-to-back wins in the McEvoy Trophy and the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley, the 16-year-old closed with rounds of 71 and 72 to finish on 11-over 291, just three shots behind McMahon.
The winner was two strokes adrift of Lindrick’s Bailey Gill after a morning 73 but closed with a 71, following a birdie at the 16th with another from 40 feet at the 18th to set the clubhouse target at eight-over par 288.
Harry Goddard was tied for the lead playing the 18th but he pushed his approach into the front right bunker before missing a short par putt to finish tied second with Austria’s Gerold Folk and Mere’s Jack Brooks on nine-over.
Mallow’s James Sugrue, who is a member of the initial Walker Cup squad, tied for 14th on 15-over 295 with South African star Jayden Schaper despite closing with a 79.
Massereene’s Tiarnan McLarnon shot rounds of 78 and 73 on the final day to finish two shots further back in 19th on 297 while Naas’ Robert Brazill (76 78) and Galway’s Ronan Mullarney (72 80) tied for 24th on 299.
