It didn't take long for Leona Maguire to pick up where she left off for Duke University after the summer break. The world amateur No 1, who was fourth on her seasonal debut in the Annika Intercollegiate last week, claimed her fourth career win for Duke in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in North Carolina.
The 20-year old Slieve Russell star closed with one under par 71 on the UNC Finley Golf Course to finish one stroke clear of Michigan State's Sarah Turnham on four under par 212 as Duke took the team title with 13 shots to spare.
Leona led by a stroke overnight from Louisville's Molly Skapik but had to battle hard to claim victory as Turnham got to four under with three to play but dropped a shot at the 18th, her 16th after a shogun start
Leona bogeyed the second but birdied the third and ninth to share the lead with Skapik with nine to play.
But as Skapik came home in two over for a 72 and a share of third with North Carolina;s Leslie Cloots, Leona followed bogeys at the 13th and 15th with birdies at the 16th and 17th to edge in front and seal victory.
