Brilliant Ireland are lying fourth after the opening round of the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy in Japan.
Canada's Brooke Henderson's shot 66 and Augusta James a 69 to give them a two-stroke lead on nine under par 135 at Karuizawa 72 Golf East — the lowest first-round score in WWATC history — from the Republic of Korea with France five behind in third.
Lisburn's Paula Grant fired a two under 70 and Skerries' Maria Dunne a 71 with an 80 by The Heath's Mary Doyle discarded to leave Ireland tied for fourth on 141 with India and Italy.
“I was really pleased with the first day,” said Canadian captain Liz Hoffman. “You are not going to win on the first day but you can certainly put yourself behind the 8-ball. There are a lot of fabulous teams out there. It was very important for all three players to be solid and they were.”
Mexico, South Africa, Spain and the USA were tied for seventh place at 2-under 142 with Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Philippines and Sweden joint 11th on 143.
