County Louth's Val Smyth fired a one under 69 to grab a one shot lead after the first round of the Tourism Malaysia sponsored Irish Seniors Close Championship at Tullamore.

The Baltray veteran leads from Courtown's Neville Steedman and the reigning Irish Seniors Open Champion Adrian Morrow from Portmarnock.

Clontarf's Turlough Considine is two shots back on one over with Maurice Kelly, John Mitchell and David Conway tied for fifth on two over.

The top 40 and ties after today's second round will qualify for Friday's final round. Three-time winner Gareth McGimpsey did not take part.
