Late birdie denies Leona Maguire in Portugal

Roberta Roeller of Germany held off a final round challenge by defending champion Leona Maguire to win the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Open by three shots.Defending champion Leona Maguire produced a dramatic final round charge before being forced to settle for second place in the Portuguese Ladies Amateur Championship.

The 17-year old from Slieve Russell was eight strokes behind eventual winner Roberta Roeller in joint second place with a round to go at Montado Golf Resort near Lisbon.

She birdied the first, third and seventh to turn in two under par and trail Roeller by six strokes. But birdies at the 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th left her just a stroke adrift of the German with the 18th to play.

However, Leona missed the green right and Roeller holed a monster birdie putt the length of the green for a closing 73 and a 283 total.

To add to her woes, Leona failed to get up and down for par and her four under par 68 left her on 286, giving Roeller her first title by three strokes.

Leona’s sister Lisa finished joint fourth, eight shots behind the winner, on 291 following a final round 72 that featured two birdies and two bogeys.

France’s Perrine Delacour carded a level par 72 to separate the twins in third place while Finland’s Anne Hakula fired a two under par 70 to join Lisa in joint fourth.

Gillian O’Leary, the only other Irish player to make the cut, finished on 313 after a final round 83.
