Irish hopefuls Mark Murphy and Niall Turner failed to earn fairytale trips to Pebble Beach for the US Open.

The Munster pair were in action at sectional qualifiers where 60 players earned starts at 13 venues.

Waterville native Murphy shot a pair of 74s at Hobe Sound in Florida to miss out by eight shots as Muskerry’s Turner also came up eight shots shy after rounds of 76-71 at Woodstock in Illinois.

Former major winners Tom Lehman, Ben Curtis and Davis Love III were the big names to make it.

But England’s Justin Rose failed to get through just 24 hours after winning his first US Tour title at the Memorial Tournament.
