The Island’s Paul McBride produced a sensational final 36 holes to advance to the Second Stage of the DP World Tour Qualiying School.

The former Wake Forest star and Walker Cup player was tied for 48th on two-under at the halfway stage of his First Stage qualifier at Millennium Golf in Belgium following two rounds of 70.

But he followed a five-under 67 with a seven-under 64 to finish tied 16th on 13-under and qualify with a shot to spare.

“I’m pleased with it especially after a slow start,” McBride said. “Nice to shoot a low one when I needed to.”

In the end, 23 players progressed on 12-under or better with France’s Franck Daux the leading qualifier on 21-under.

Newlands’ Cameron Raymond was unfortunate to miss out by a shot on 11-under after following a brace of 66s with rounds of 73 and 68.

Raymond was 11-under-par and three under for the day with five holes to play but bogeyed the 14th and double-bogeyed the 15th and while he bibirdied the last three holes, he was one shot shy.

Richard O’Donovan missed the 54-hole cut by four strokes on three-over after rounds of 74, 69 and 73.
