McKibbin and Murphy pleased but eight off the pace in Mauritius

Rookies Tom McKibbin and John Murphy opened with two-under 70s but found themselves eight strokes behind Finland’s Sami Välimäki in the year-ending AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

The Finn fired a bogey-free course-record 10-under-par 62 to open up a two-stroke lead over South Africa’s Oliver Bekker at Mont Choisy Le Golf.

McKibbin and Murphy ended the day tied for 26th as Gary Hurley’s level par 72 left him just inside the projected cut line.

“It's been a long year,” said Murphy, who was frustrated to miss several chances before picking up two shots in his last five holes. “This is my 36th event of the year, so that's a lot of golf by any standard, really. It's nice to finish it off in a place like this and just try to enjoy the week. But I just said I'll come out with my caddie and try and enjoy it as much as I could. So I am just taking that approach to the week.”

As for the test, he knows he will have to be sharp with his approach play on a course that is generous off the tee in places.

“Yeah, we had some rain, hail and shine out there but it was a nice day all the same,” Murphy said. “I played nicely out there. It got pretty frustrating at times, to be honest. I kept giving myself chances, missed a few and then thankfully made a couple of coming in. So it was nice to finish off the day on a high note.

“Approach shots can be quite testing out there. There's a crosswind on a lot of holes, which makes it tough.  I suppose the fact that it has been lenient off the tee means it does give you a lot of chances coming into the greens.”

McKibbin, who has had three top-20 finishes in his first three starts as a rookie, was pleased to finish in the red.

“I’m happy with that today,” he said. “I didn't play great at all. I just hacked it around and got it in under par, which I was happy enough with. Hopefully, I can maybe go and hit a few balls after and make it better for tomorrow.”

As for the course, he said: “It played tricky enough. For the first four or five holes, there wasn't much wind and it was pretty straightforward. But then the wind picked up and then we got a couple of holes of rain on our back nine so overall it was pretty tricky day if things weren't going great.

“It's sort of wideish off the tee. You can hit a  bad drive that's just missing the fairway but  once you miss the greens, there are massive run-offs and even on the greens are sort of wee sort of moguls and  things like that you  have to navigate so you definitely have to be sharp on the greens or it's not easy.”

On a day of intermittent rain but not much wind, Välimäki bettered the previous course record of 64 set by South Africa’s Jayden Schaper. South Africa’s Oliver Bekker is his nearest challenger following an equally impressive round of eight-under-par 64, while Frenchman Pierre Pineau had set the morning target with his seven-under-par 65.

“It was a really nice round. I putted very well and made long putts which I haven’t made in the last few weeks. It was nice to get it rolling like I did today,” said Välimäki, who finished second in the recent Joburg Open.

Välimäki and Bekker played together and it was an exhibition of great golf between the two professionals.

“Oliver played great as well so we kept making putts and enjoying the day. I feel like I found a rhythm and speed for these greens and that was the key for the day. The heat wasn’t bad today as well because of the rain. I’ll just keep grinding and hitting good shots to give myself opportunities.”

Bekker was certainly impressed by what he saw in his playing partner’s game.

“It was unbelievable golf. I think we certainly pulled each other along. It was good fun out there. We were quite relaxed even during the rain. Sami is obviously playing some great golf and hopefully, in the second round we can keep pushing each other.”

Bekker has always enjoyed Mauritius and this tournament. “I generally play well here. I’ve played every AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open and I’ve had several top-10 finishes. I feel comfortable playing here and it showed again today.”

European Ryder Cup hopeful Thomas Detry made a solid start with his opening four-under-par 68. The local Mauritian challenge is also looking good after an opening 72 from Vishnoo Seeneevassen.

The 2022 AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open has also drawn a glittering array of blue-chip sponsors including Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels, Mont Choisy Group, Jaguar, Rogers, Heritage Resorts, IBL, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA), 3G Mobile, Phoenix Beverages, Air Mauritius, Mautourco, Fenix XCell Apparel, Hertz, Jacobs, C-Care, Emtel, PRO CARTS, IT Solvz, Häagen-Dazs and Dragon Electronics.
