Dundalk's Brendan Lawlor teamed up with Spain’s Juan Postigo and won 6&4 to help The World lead Australia 2-1 after the opening day of the ISPS Handa Disabled Golf Cup in Melbourne.

They were too strong in foursomes for Mike Rolls and Tony Coates in tough conditions at The Metropolitan Golf Club where Australia's Stephen Prior and Shane Luke kept the contest alive with a 2-up win over Belgium’s Adem Wahbi and Dominican Manuel De Los Santos.

"It felt pretty good today," Lawlor said. "We were pretty slow to start but we hit a lot of good shots and from seven to 12 we played pretty steady."

Joking, Lawlor added: "If I was at home in this weather, I'd be sitting on the couch and not playing golf! But it's unbelievable. Again, we focussed very well today in the conditions. We adapted well and got a really good win to start off the campaign."

The World team won the opening two matches on the opening day of the two-day match between two six-strong teams.

With Lawlor and Postigo putting The World team 1-0 ahead, German Timo Klischan and Englishman Ashley Harris edged out Cameron Pollard and Geoff Nicholas 2-up.

The World team leads 2-1 with three fourball matches on the second and final day.
