Tramore's Robin Dawson carded a four-under par 68 at Prince's to lead the 20-strong Irish contingent after the first round of strokeplay qualifying for the Amateur Championship.

The leading 64 players after two rounds at Prince's and Royal St George's will qualify for the matchplay stages at Sandwich on Wednesday but so far only Dawson, Stuart Grehan, Rowan Lester and Paul McBride are inside the magic number.

Most of the low scoring came at Prince's with Grehan shoot 69 and Lester a 71 as McBride carded an excellent, one-under 69 at Royal St George's.

Eighteen of the top 19 scores came at Prince's where Iceland's Gisli Sveinbergsson shot an eight-under par 64 to lead by a shot from Italy's Alberto Castagnara.

The Amateur Championship,  Royal St George's (Par 70)/ Prince's (Par 72)
