Thompson hangs tough at windy Welsh Ladies Amateur
Rachel Thompson (Cork)

Rachel Thompson (Cork)

Cork’s Rachel Thompson was the only member of the 11-strong Irish contingent to break 80 as high winds sent scores soaring in the opening round of the Welsh Ladies Open Amateur Stroke Play at Ashburnham.

The average score was 84.08 but England’s Sophie Lamb carded a level par 73 and leads by two strokes from compatriot Gemma Clews and by three from Cara Gainer.

Thompson's six-over 79 was good enough for a share of 10th place with Castlewarden's Lauren Walsh and Lisburn's Paula Grant the next best of the Irish, tied for 15th on seven over after a pair of 80s.
