Mitchell tied for the lead in Irish Seniors

Tramore’s John Mitchell three birdies and three bogeys in an opening 72 to share the lead Irish Seniors Amateur Open at Co Tipperary.

He shares top spot with England’s Richard Clarke and Ian Elmes on level par with the 2013 champion, Doneraile’s Michael Quirke, tied for fourth after a 73. 

Mourne’s Hugh Smyth shot 74 with three-time champion Adrian Morrow and 12-time senior major winner Garth McGimpsey tied 29th after 78s.

The top 45 players and ties will qualify for the final 18 holes on Friday with the proviso that there are four players in the Over 60s category, three players in the Over 65s category and two players in the Over 70s category included.
