McIlroy down to world No 4 - but he's 39th in 2013

McIlroy was world No 1 at the end of last year but would only rank 39th in 2013 on world ranking points gained. He was set to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange today yet given the upswing in his fortunes in recent weeks, the word on McIlroy stock must surely be “BUY”.

Graeme McDowell remained at ninth in the world - he’s also ninth in 2013 - while Shane Lowry moved up four places to 78th following his 10th place finish in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Lowry has gained 46.513 points this year, which would make him only the 120th hottest player on the planet this season.

Padraig Harrington, who fell one place to 86th in the latest rankings, has still won more points this season than Lowry and ranks 114th this year alone.
