Top Amateur Talent Set to Battle for Magee Scratch Cup at Donegal Golf Club
The countdown is on for one of the most anticipated events on the Irish amateur golfing calendar, as Donegal Golf Club prepares to host the prestigious Magee Scratch Cup on Saturday, August 22nd.
The historic links course on the Murvagh Peninsula will welcome a full field of Ireland's finest amateur players for a gruelling 36-hole stroke play competition. With tee times commencing at 7:00 AM, competitors will face the dual challenge of a demanding layout and the unpredictable Atlantic coastal elements in pursuit of the coveted Magee Cup title.
Returning to defend his crown is 2025 champion Dwayne Mallon of Dungannon Golf Club, who secured victory last year with a remarkable six-under-par total over two rounds.
Mallon, who has been in fine form since his triumph, expressed his excitement at returning to the Donegal coastline.
"Winning the Senior Scratch Cup at Murvagh last year was a great feeling," Mallon said. "It’s such a brilliant course and a very tough test, so to come out on top was very rewarding. The course seems to get better every time I play it, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of the changes Paul McGinley and his team have made."
The event is a staple of the Irish golfing circuit, testing not just skill but strategy and endurance against the backdrop of Donegal’s breathtaking scenery.
The course, originally designed by Eddie Hackett, has recently undergone a significant redesign overseen by former European Ryder Cup Captain Paul McGinley, adding a fresh layer of complexity to the already formidable links.
Club Captain John Neary spoke of the club's pride in hosting the event.

The championship has a history of producing dramatic finishes. In 2023, Noel Crawford of Mourne Golf Club claimed the title in a thrilling sudden-death playoff, while Portmarnock’s Annraoi Collins took home the trophy in 2024.
