Career-changing win for Meronk in Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Poland’s Adrian Meronk claimed a career lifeline with an emotional victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the Old Course at St Andrews.
The 2022 Irish Open champion came from two strokes behind overnight leader Casey Jarvis, carding a four-under-par 68 to win by two strokes from the South African (72) and Denmark’s Niklas Norgaard (68) at 20-under par.
“It’s unreal, to be honest,” said Meronk, who began the week 141st in the Race to Dubai and desperate to secure full DP World Tour status after his LIV Golf contract ran out at the end of this season
“I never usually cry, but this one feels really special. It’s been quite a tough year for me, and to win here after 10 years as a pro, it’s a dream come true, and it’s unbelievable. I’m extremely happy and very relieved.”
Now 38th in the rankings and exempt for the next two years, the Pole (33) also claimed a cheque for €xxx, xxxx as well as the team title with singer Tom Chaplin.
While he bogeyed the 17th to see his lead cut to a single stroke, he was able to enjoy the walk over Swilcan Bridge after Jarvis also bogeyed the penultimate hole.
“It’s an amazing walk when you cross the bridge,” Meronk said. “I was actually thinking about Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus walking on the bridge, and I was kind of asking for that good momentum, good energy from them, and it was just a great feeling.”
As for what the win means for his career, he said: “The goal for the rest of the season was to try to get my status for next year, and that helps me a lot.
“I’m super happy that I achieved that goal. But definitely, I will have to re-evaluate my goals for the rest of the season.”
Pádraig Harrington, meanwhile, closed with a one-over-par 73 to finish tied for 35th on nine-under.
