Séamus Power endured a bitterly disappointing day in the greens to see his victory hopes dashed in the wind-lashed Sony Open in Hawaii.
The west Waterford man had 36 putts in a two-over 72 to find himself tied for 62nd on level par, 12 strokes behind leader Davis Riley.
Riley birdied four of the last seven holes at windswept Waialae Country Club to post a three-under 67 and take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA TOUR's season-opening event.
He leads on 12-under from Harry Hall (66), Chris Gotterup (68) and Kevin Roy (69) while Power is left battling for the minor places.
The Tooraneena man went into the third round tied for 47th on two under, but all hopes of a third-round charge were dashed when he four-putted from 56 feet for a double-bogey six at the second.
He got a shot back when he made an eight-footer for a birdie two at the fourth.
But he missed four birdie xhabches between seven and 15 feet on the next four greens, then bogeyed the 10th and 14th before finishing with a birdie in a round where he lost 4.4 shots to the field on the greens
It was a different story for Riley, who tops the putting stats after gaining over 11 strokes on the field with the blade over the first three rounds.
“You've got to make some gritty pars in these conditions and just try to make some putts on these fast greens in crosswinds in tough putting conditions when you have a chance," Riley said.
On the 18th, he ran his 60-foot eagle chance eight feet past but made the return.
Power tees off in the final round with Tom Kim at 5:55 pm Irish time today and will have another chance to shine at The American Express at La Quinta next week, where World No 1 Scottie Scheffler makes his first start of 2026.
