Poots best of the Irish in Buenos Aires; Slow Jones Cup weekend for Tiernan and Grehan

County Louth’s Gavin Tiernan and Stuart Grehan finished in the pack in the Jones Cup Invitational in Georgia.

Tiernan tied for 40th on six-over par after rounds of 73 and 77 with Grehan a shot further back in joint 46th after rounds of 75 and 76 on the Ocean Course at Sea Island.

Southern Methodist University’s William Sides shot a brace of 69s to win by two strokes from American compatriots Frankie Harris and Miles Russell on six under.

It was also a mixed week for the Irish in the South American Amateur in Buenos Aires.

Ecuador’s Felipe Garcés won for the second time since the 2024 edition in Colombia, carding rounds of 69, 67, 74 and 67 to go wire-to-wire at Nordelta Golf Club.

At 11-under, he won by four shots from Wales’ Tom Bastow with Mexico’s Jose Safa third on six under.

Malone’s Fionn Dobbin (77 75 69 74) was joint 23rd on seven under while Galgorm’s Joshua Hill (79 72 78 71 was joint 31st on 12 over.

In the women’s event, Peru’s Luisamariana Mesones beat Barbados’ Emily Odwin at the second tie hole after they had tied on eight under.

Knock’s Katie Poots was 11th on six over (80 72 73 69) while Kate Dillon was 16th on 11 over (76 79 72 72).

The South American Men’s team won the Harrison Cup team event from the GB&I men.
