Cork’s John Doyle won one of his two matches as the United States took a 6.5-5.5 lead over Europe into the second day of the Junior Ryder Cup in New York.

The Fota Island golfer (18) partnered Chris Kim to a 1-up win over Hamilton Coleman and Lunden Esterline in Tuesday morning’s 3-3 foursomes session tie.

It was tougher for the Irish Boys champion in the mixed foursomes in the afternoon as he teamed up with Alice Kong and they fell 6&4 to Esterline and Zoe Cusack.

The USA won that session 3.5-2.5 to take the overnight lead at Nassau Country Club, around 16 miles from Ryder Cup venue Bethpage Black.

However, there were huge four-hole swings in several matches and European captain Stephen Gallacher reminded his players to remain focused right to the 18th.

“It just shows you that on this course, you can never count your chickens,” Gallacher said after Sara Brentcheneff and Hugo Le Goff came back from four down after eight holes to halve their match with Asterisk Talley and Miles Russell.

“We saw two 4-up matches (this afternoon) that didn’t win. You don’t normally see that. This course, you’ve got to be on it all the time. You’ve got to hit great shots.”

The action continues with six mixed fourballs today before the event concludes with the singles at Ryder Cup venue Bethpage Black tomorrow.

Doyle has been paired with Denmark’s Benedicte Brent-Petersen.
