Malone’s Matthew McClean failed to make the 64 qualifiers for the matchplay stages of the US Mid-Amateur by one stroke when he made a sextuple bogey 11 in a second round 81 at Troon North Golf Club in Arizona.
The 2022 champion was one of four co-leaders after opening with a five-under 66 at Troon Country Club, but after making bogeys at the second, third, 11th and 12th, he ran a sextuple bogey 11 at the par-five 14th to find himself outside the projected cut mark.
He birdied the 16th to get back to four-over for the qualifier but bogeyed the 17th and carded a 10-over 81 that left him on five over and a shot outside a 10-man playoff to determine the last three spots in the top 64 today.
Arizona’s Cody Massa and first-time competitor Patrick Dewey from Florida each posted 5-under-par 137 in stroke play to share medalist honours.
Massa followed a first-round 70 at Troon Country Club with a 4-under 67 at Troon North Golf Club on Sunday, while Dewey added an even-par 71 at Troon C.C. to his opening 66.
Three-time champion Stewart Hagestad, 2024 semifinalist Drew Kittleson, 2022 semifinalist Josh Persons and Ryan O’Rear finished one stroke back at 4-under 138. O’Rear rebounded from a slow start Saturday to play his final 30 holes in 8 under, including a Sunday 68 at Troon C.C.
“Yeah, this is awesome. We’re having a great time,” O’Rear said. “Troon Country Club is a fantastic golf course, so I’m excited to get to play it again tomorrow.”
