Séamus Power has a chance to edge closer to securing full playing on the PGA TOUR as world number one Scottie Scheffler chases down Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin and his sixth win of the season in the Procore Championship in California.
Power is ranked 130th in the FedEx Cup fall standings, but with only the top 100 fully exempt next season, and the top 125 getting conditional status, he's in position to make a positive move up the rankings at Silverado Resort.
One over for the day with six holes to play, the West Waterford man made a hat trick of birdies from the 13th to post a two-under 70 that left him tied for 25th on six-under and projected to move up to 124th with five events to go.
Five of the ten US Ryder Cup players in action in Napa sit behind the Tooraneena man on the leaderboard — Sam Burns (30th), Patrick Cantlay and Colin Morikawa (41st), Harris English (46th) and Justin Thomas (53rd).
But the final day looks like it could deliver a win for one of Keegan Bradley's team as Ryder Cup rookie Ben Griffin bogeyed the 18th and shot 70 to lead by just one stroke from world amateur number one Jackson Koivun, who shot 68, and two shots from Scheffler on 16 under.
The world number one made 10 birdies in an eight-under 64, overcoming a double bogey at the 14th with three birdies in his last four holes to close the gap on Griffin.
The North Carolina native (29) has had a stellar year, winning twice, and while he's aware of Scheffler's looming presence, he believes he can head to Bethpage Black with another win.
"I think at the Charles Schwab, maybe he was in the group or two behind me and ultimately I won," Griffin said. "So I know I can do it.
"Not too worried about what he's going to do, I've just got to play better than him, and if I do that tomorrow, I should be able to lift the trophy.
"Obviously, there are some other guys there in the mix too, but I think everyone knows what Scottie Scheffler's capable of and I've just got to stay in front."
Koivun (20) has a chance to become the second amateur to win on the PGA Tour in as many years after Nick Dunlap claimed The American Express last season.
"I know Nick pretty well," said Koivun, who helped the USA win the Walker Cup last week.
"I haven't really talked with him about this week, but I definitely might want to go watch his rerun and see what he did."
Scheffler, however, remains the big threat.
The Texan started the third round eight shots behind Griffin before slowly closing the gap.
"I mean, if I go out and play good, consistent golf, I'm going to start moving my way up the leaderboard, and that was the goal going into today," Scheffler said.
"Like I said, I had a good front nine and I was trying to keep that momentum going into the back."
With JJ Spaun and Russell Henley tied for ninth on nine-under, it's been a good week for the Ryder Cup-bound players.
"Yeah, definitely glad to see another teammate up on top of the leaderboard," Scheffler said of Griffin, who won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Andrew Novak before winning the Charles Schwab Challenge.
"We love going into the Ryder Cup seeing guys play well, and Ben's had a great year, so it's nice to see him continue that trend this week and have a good prep week going into the Ryder Cup."
