Castlewarden’s Lauren Walsh opened with a bogey-free 67 to share the lead with Denmark’s Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen in the Tenerife Women’s Open at Abama Golf.
Kibsgaard Nielsen set the pace for most of the day before Walsh, who lies 11th in the Order of Merit after a great start to the season, matched her on five under in the last group of the day
“We were last out, so it’s been a long day,“ Walsh said. “But I played nicely. I hit it pretty consistently and holed a lot of putts. There are a couple of quirky holes, so you have to plod your way around and play smart golf.
“It’s definitely tricky, but thankfully, my coach has been out here quite a lot, so he had me briefed on a lot of the golf course before I got here.
“So I sort of knew what to expect. In general, it sets things up very well for me and I’m really happy.”
They led by a shot from England’s Eleanor Givens, who carded six birdies and dropped two shots for a round of 68.
Anna Foster was 17th after a 71 as Canice Screene shot 75 and fellow rookies Sara Byrne and Annabel Wilson struggled to 77s.
