Irish quintet in cut danger at Q-School test in Spain

Ireland’s quintet of card hopefuls face a brutal battle just to make today’s 72-hole cut at the Final Stage of the DP World Tour Qualifying School in Spain.
Cormac Sharvin’s two-under 70 on the Lakes Course at Infinitum Golf in Tarragona left him the best of the bunch on three-under par after three rounds.
At tied 77th, the Co Down man was still a shot outside the top 60 and ties who will qualify for the last two rounds in the 108-hole battle to make the top 20 and ties who will be win cards.
A one-under 70 at the Hills Course left Whitehead’s John-Ross Galbraith shot further back in 90th as Mark Power, Max Kennedy and Conor Purcell all saw their hopes dealt a massive blow.
Power made two triple bogeys, Ian eight at the 15th and a costly seven at the ninth (his 18th), in a four-over 76 on the Hills Course that left him 98th on one-under, three shots outside the projected cut mark and seven shots outside the all-important top 20.
Kennedy was 109th on level par after a 72 on the Lakes Course, while Purcell made five birdies, four bogeys and two triple bogeys in a 77 at the Hills Course to share 119th on one-over.
While Purcell and Kennedy will have status on the second-tier HotelPlanner Tour, making the 72-hole cut would give the others a chance to improve their status.
Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith and South Africa’s Zander Lombard shot 67s at the Hills to lead by a shot on 15 under from Italy’s Leo de Gregorio and American Davis Bryant, who fired a 10-under 62 yesterday.
