Séamus Power took a small but important step towards retaining his PGA Tour card when he made seven birdies in a sparkling six-under 66 to move into contention at the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico.
The West Waterford man (38) lies 135th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings with only the top 100 after The RSM Classic, earning exempt status for 2026.
There are still two events to go after this week, including next week's Butterfield Bermuda Championship, where Power claimed his second PGA Tour win in 2023.
But he's now given himself a chance to make a big move at El Cardonal at Diamante Cabo San Lucas, despite finishing with a three-putt bogey at the ninth.
"It's one of those courses where there's always so many chances out there, but that wasn't too bad today," said the Tooraneena man, who was tied for ninth on 10-under, just four shots behind early halfway leader Victor Perez, who shot 65 to lead by two from Eric Cole (63) and Justin Lower (65).
"So a couple more of those, and hopefully I'll be in a good spot come Sunday."
Power turned in a scintillating five-under 31 as he opened back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th and added another three in a row from the 14th.
Birdie fours at the first and sixth catapulted him to 11-under, and while he dropped a shot at the par-three ninth, he was upbeat about what lies ahead.
"Nothing really has changed," said Power, who could break into the top 100 in the rankings if he finishes second, while 19th place would put him inside the top 125 who will get conditional status.
"You go into every week and you do your best to set yourself up to win. Obviously, I haven't put myself in a lot of good positions, but a couple of decent rounds here, and a couple of decent ones recently, so it's trending in the right way.
"So you never know in golf."
