Seamus Power produced a key up and down on the final green to make the cut in the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.
Ranked 130th in the FedEx Cup standings, the West Waterford man has four events after this week to make the top 100 who will be fully exempt or the top 125 who will have conditional status next year.
But he had to work hard just to make the weekend at the Country Club of Jackson, where he carded a four-under 68 to make the weekend.
A chip and putt from just over the 18th allowed him to make the four-under-par cut with nothing to spare but he still has an opportunity to make some lucrative FedEx Cup points.
He’s five shots outside the top 10 and nine strokes behind South Africa’s Garrick Higgo, who shot a six-under 66 to lead by a shot on 13-under from Eric Cole (67) and Taylor Montgomery (63).
Higgo won the Corales Puntacana Championship the week after the Masters but suffered a labrum injury that all but wrecked the rest of his season.
“It wasn't hurting me in my swing, but walking made it really bad, and then it would pinch the next day,” explained Higgo, who opted not to have hip surgery. “So just figuring out how I can avoid that.
“I’ve changed the way I work out, just being a bit more clever with that, I would say.”
On the LPGA Tour, Stephanie Meadow made five bogeys in a three 75 to slip back to joint 54th on two under with a round to play in the LOTTE Championship in Hawaii.
Japan’s Akie Iwai shot 71 to take a one stroke lead over an eight strong group — Minami Katsu, Hyo Joo Kim, Megan Khang, Peiyun Chien, Brooke Matthews, Pornanong Phatlum, Jessica Porvasnik and Youmin Hwang — into the final round.
Meanwhile, the USA won the World Amateur Team Championships for the Espirito Santo Trophy in Singapore.
The team ofCatherine Park, Farah O’Keefe and Megha Ganne tied with Korea and Spain on 18 under but won by virtue of their better third round non-counting score.
Ireland finished tied for 15th on one-under as Beth Coulter shot 69 and Emma Fleming a 75 as Aine Donegan’s 76 was non-counting.
China’s Ying Xu topped the individual standings on 13-under as Coulter tied for 31st on level par.
Donegan was joint 39th on three-over with Fleming joint 74th on 14-over.
