Seamus Power is chasing a big finish in the Bank of Utah Championship as he looks to ease his workload in his quest to keep his PGA TOUR card.
The West Waterford man the cut on the mark when he finished his delayed second round on Saturday morning and carded a second successive 70 to share 59th on two-under.
He made four birdies and a bogey in a three-under 68 last night to move to 52nd on five-under.
But at 130th in the FedEx Cup Fall standings, he needs a big finish at Black Desert Resort today to get closer to the top 100 who will retain full cards next season.
There are still three events remaining after this week— the World Wide Technology Championship in Mexico, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and The RSM Classic.
But while Power would need to shoot 10 under today to crack the top 100, a 67 or better would likely catapult him into the top 125, who will have conditional status and give him something to build on in Mexico in two weeks’ time.
He heads into the final round 12 strokes behind rookie Michael Brennan, who is looking to take advantage of a sponsor exemption and win his maiden PGA Tour title in just his third start.
The Virginia native (23) shot a seven-under 64 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead over defending champion Matt McCarty into the final round.
“I have a great opportunity tomorrow, so try to take advantage of it, stay focused," Brennan said.
“I was a little nervous, definitely. I don’t think it was anything crazy. Nothing that I hadn’t experienced playing professional golf on (PGA TOUR Americas).
“I felt like those experiences were pretty similar, which I’m very happy about. I’ve had some experience, and I hope to draw on that tomorrow. But when you’re out on the golf course, it’s just you and the golf course. ”
Rico Hoey (63), Kevin Yu (63) and Pierceson Coody (66) were tied for third on 14 under with Hayden Springer (62) and Thorbjørn Olesen (65) a shot further back.
In the FedExCup, Yu is 61st, Hoey 91st, Olesen 116th, Springer 131st and Coody 133rd.
“I’m pretty far back in terms of keeping my card, so it means a lot,” said Springer, who is just behind Power in the standings. “It’s important to me. There is a big difference between being in a conditional status to full status.”
On the PGA TOUR Champions, Padraig Harrington’s hopes of completing a hat-trick of wins in the Simmons Bank Championship evaporated when he carded a two-over 74 in the second round in Arkansas.
The US Senior Open and ISPS Handa Senior Open champion had 33 putts in a two-over 74 and slipped to 38th in the 52-man field on level par at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock.
New Zealand’s Steven Alker followed an opening 61 with a 66 to lead by five shots from Tag Ridings on 17 under with Darren Clarke tied for 13th on five under after a 71.
