Lyons wins Spanish Senior Men's Amateur by four after closing 67 in Seville

Galway’s Joe Lyons closed with a five-under 67 to come from three shots off the lead to win the Spanish Senior Men's Amateur Championship by four strokes at Real Club Sevilla Golf.

The former West of Ireland champion began the third and final round tied for sixth on two-under-par as France’s Benjamin Morin led by two strokes on five-under from a four-man chasing pack that included Milltown’s Jody Fanagan.

Birdies at the fifth, eighth and ninth saw Lyons turn in three-under 33 before he added further birdies at the 10th, 12th and 13th to go six-under for the day.

He eventually sandwiched a birdie four at the 16th between bogeys at the 14th and 17th to shoot 67 and win by four strokes from France’s Pascal Grizot (71) and Italy’s Pfoestl Franz on seven-under.

Scores

Fanagan made an eagle, three birdies and six bogeys in a closing 73 to finish tied fourth on two-under with Alan Condren (74), David Mulholland (70) and Noel Crawford (73) joint 12th on two-over.

Karl Bornemann (71) was 22nd on four-over with Andrew Morris (76) tied 27th on six-over.

Declan O’Neill shot 73 to tie for 38th on eight-over with John Reynolds (76) 43rd on nine-over and Peter Sheehan (74) joint 49th on 11-over.

Shane Kenneally was tied 57th on 13-over after a closing 79.
