Sam Burns clinched the fifth win of his PGA Tour career and a cheque for $3.5 million when he beat Cameron Young 6&5 in the final of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas.

Having come back from 2-down with six to play to beat world number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler on the 21st in the semi-finals,  the 26-year-old from Louisiana put on an impressive display in the final as Rory McIlroy beat Scheffler 2&1 to finish third.

One down through three holes, he birdied eight of the next 10 holes, carding four birdies in row from the 10th to close out victory over 25-year-old Young, who had come back from 2-down with three to play to beat Rory McIlroy on the 19th in his semi-final.

“What a week,” said Burns, who returns to the world’s top 10. “I'm so tired. Yeah, it was fun playing Cam today. I know he didn't have his best stuff, but it was a great match.  “I played good golf but got off to not a great start.

But I felt like I found something at the end of my match this morning with Scottie and I was able to carry that on this afternoon.”
