Robert Brazill, Richard Knightly and Robert Moran were the best of the Irish after the opening round of the African Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Leopard Creek.

They opened with one-over 73s to share 18th place, six shots behind South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter, whose five under 67 gave him a one-shot lead over compatriot Fabrizio de Abreu. Scores

Matt McClean and Jack McDonnell were tied 25th after 74s with Marc Boucher and Hugh Foley tied 46th after 77s.

Josh Hill was joint 54th after a six-over 78.
