Royal Dublin's Hugh Foley remained on track to become the fifth Irish winner when he reached the quarter-finals of the Spanish Amateur Championship in Cádiz.

The reigning West of Ireland champion (24) recovered from a double-bogey, bogey start and played his last eight holes in four-under at Sherry Golf Jerez to beat Spain's Jaime Montojo 2 and 1.

He then got off to a fast start and beat Germany's Thomas Schmidt 3 and 1 to set up a quarter-final clash with England's John Gough as he bids to etch his name alongside Philip Walton, Michael Quirke, Darren Clarke and Reeve Whitson on the Copa del Rey.

"I love the course," Foley reported. "It's soft in the morning but plays like links in the afternoon. It gets firm, and the wind has picked up every day. There's space off the tee to open the shoulders, but when it gets bouncy, hitting fairways is rewarded."
