Grehan and McCabe show form at Portmarnock Links

The 18th at Portmarnock Links

Tullamore's Stuart Grehan made three birdies in a one-under 70 to claim the nett in a wet and windy TaylorMade Winter Series outing at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.

The former amateur star was the only player in the 78-strong field to break par.

He won the nett by one stroke from Portmarnock Links' Aidan McGrath and by three from Woodbrook's Conor McGlynn.

Grehan birdied the fifth and sixth and bogeyed the seventh to out in one-under before covering the back nine in level with a birdie at the 10th and a bogey at the 15th

Portmarnock Links' AJ McCabe had the next best score of the day, carding a level par 71 to win the gross.

The plus three-handicapper made nine pars on the front nine, three-putted the 14th, but birdied the last to edge out Gareth Lappin on a countback.

The Belvoir Park man, who was playing off plus three, birdied the second, 14th and 15th but bogeyed the second and double-bogeyed the 16th for his 71.

Dunmurry's Niall Carroll was third in the gross with a one-over 72.

He had 17 pars in a row playing off plus one but bogeyed the 18th, missing out on the chance to emulate Nick Faldo's 18 pars to win the Open at Muirfield 1987.

Portmarnock Links' Aidan McGrath won the second nett with a 71.

The three-handicapper played off five on the day and made birdies at the 11th, 14th and 18th en route to a gross 76.

Woodbrook's Conor McGlynn won the third nett off three on the day.

He went out in three-over-par with bogeys on the second, fifth and ninth and came home in two-over-par with back to back bogeys on the 14th and 15th.
