Mulligan and Moynihan fire 65s to claim spoils in TaylorMade Winter Series

Portrane’s Gavin Moynihan shot a bogey-free, six-under 65 to win the gross at Portmarnock Links

Daniel Mulligan and Gavin Moynihan took advantage of perfect links conditions to fire six-under 65s and claim the top prizes in the TaylorMade Winter Series at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links.

A field of 100 players took to the course in cold, early conditions but with only light winds and temperatures rising to the teens, scoring was excellent at the Bernhard Langer designed links.

Portmarnock Links member Mulligan, who turned professional last December as a 16-year-old, birdied the second, third and fourth but bogeyed the seventh to turn in two-under.

The dropped shot did not appear to bother him as he came home in four-under thanks to birdies at the 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th to beat European Tour player Moynihan to first the nett thanks to his superior back nine.

Lisburn’s Patrick Buckley, a 7.7 handicapper who played off 10 on the day, birdied the last for a nett 70 to finish second with Millicent’s Sean Connolly (8.7 index) third with a 71 off 11.

In the gross, Moynihan went out in three-under-par thanks to birdies at the fourth, fifth and ninth, then came back in three-under with birdies at the 10th, 13th and 14th for a bogey-free 65.

Naas’ Jonathan Yates claimed the second gross with a one-under 70 as he birdied the fourth and eighth but bogeyed the ninth to turn in one-under, the mixed birdies at the 10th and 14th with bogeys at the 12th and the 18th.

Grange professional Michael McDermott, a regular prize winner in the Winter Series, was third with a level par 71.

He bogeyed the first, third and seventh to turn in three-over but birdied the 11th, 13th and 17th to navigate the links in level par.
