Johnson renews with TaylorMade, resumes with two-under 71 in Kapalua
World number one Dustin Johnson has renewed his megabucks deal with TaylorMade as he bids to top his Masters-winning season with an even better year in 2021.
The American (36) yesterday signed a multi-year contract extension to remain in the same stable as Rory McIlroy, just days after world No 2 Jon Rahm moved to Callaway.
“With all the challenges of 2020, it was one of my best years on the golf course,” said Johnson, who has made more than $70 million in tournament earnings and won 24 PGA Tour events, including the 2016 US Open and a record-setting Masters win last year.
As for his plans for 2021, he said: “Motivation for me, it's not that hard. I mean, I like being the best. I want to continue the good play and hopefully can have a little bit better year this year.”
Yet to decide what to serve his fellow Masters champions at the traditional dinner at Augusta National in April — “Right now it's all over the board” — he admitted donning the green jacket surpassed all expectations.
“I for sure definitely dreamed about winning the Masters and it wasn't even close,” said Johnson, who last night opened with a two-under 71 to lie tied 30th, six shots behind Harris English and playing partner Justin Thomas, who returned to action with eight under 65’s in the Sentry Tournament of Champions on the Plantation Course at Kapalua.
“You dream about winning it and what it's going to be like, but until you actually do and experience it, yeah, I don't think the dream was anywhere close to the feeling and the gratification and everything that goes along with it. It was much more special than I dreamed, for sure.”
