It took an extra 24 hours but it was well worth the wait as Spanish Point beat Kenmare at the sixth tie hole to claim the Munster title in the AIG Pierce Purcell Shield at Fermoy.

Spanish Point's Sean McMahon and Patrick Hogan faced Kenmare's Gerald O'Dwyer and Carlie Vaughan in the decisive match.

The match should have been settled on the 21st but Vaughan holed an excellent long putt across the tricky green.  After the par-three fifth was halved in the darkness at 8 pm, Tournament Director David Prendergast was left with no option but to order the teams to return at 4 pm on Sunday to conclude hostilities.

On the resumption of play on Sunday, the two pairs halved the par-five sixth hole before Hogan holed the winning putt for Spanish Point at the seventh which was the sixth sudden-death hole.

It's the first time in six years that the Clare club has won the Munster pennant and they will be hoping to complete the double of 2014 when they head for Donegal GC in October for the AIG Cups & Shields All Ireland Finals from October 28-30.
