Mark Power closed with a sensational 66 but lost out in a sudden-death, three-way playoff for the Brabazon Trophy at Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire.

The Kilkenny talent went into the final round tied for 12th, six shots behind Denmark’s Christoffer Bring and England’s Enrique Dimayuga after following rounds of 68 and 67 with a disappointing 73.

But he scorched through the field on the final day by carding the lowest round of the day by four shots and one of just six sub-par scores.

While it wasn’t quite good enough to earn him the win, it will give him confidence ahead of next week’s Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale.

The Wake Forest star birdied the second, bogeyed the short fourth but then eagled the fifth, bogeyed the short seventh and eagled the eighth for the second time in four days to turn in 33.

He then came home in 33, picking up further birdies at the 12th and par-five 6th to set the clubhouse target at 10-under 274.

Bring was four strokes clear on 14-under with eight holes to play but bogeyed the 12th, then double-bogeyed the 15th and bogeyed the 17th to card a 72 that left him tied with Power and Ravetto, who bogeyed the 17th for a 70.

In the sudden-death playoff,  Ravetto and Bring both birdied the first extra hole as Power made par to bow out.

He was bidding to become the fifth Irish winner of the Brabazon Trophy and join David Long (1979), Ronan Rafferty (tied with Peter McEvoy in 1980), Niall Kearney (2009) and Cormac Sharvin (2015).

The title eventually went to Frenchman Ravetto, who birdied the second extra hole.

Holywood’s Tom McKibbin finished eighth on six-under after a 71 with Malone’s Matthew McClean and Royal Dublin’s Hugh Foley 20th on level par as Carton House’s Marc Boucher tied for 41st on three-over.
