Clegg and Armstrong weather rainstorms at Portmarnock Links

The par-three 17th at Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links.

Donaghadee’s Andrew Clegg survived difficult weather conditions to card a level par 71 and win in the gross in the TaylorMade Summer Series at Portmarnock Links.

With many regulars staying away due to the inclement weather, Clegg topped the 36-strong field as he birdied the fifth, seventh and ninth to turn in three-under, birdied the 10th to go to four-over but then faltered as heavy rain hit the course.

After bogeys at the 13th and 14th, he lost his tee shot at the 15th and made a triple-bogey seven to slip to one-over before finishing birdie-par-par for his 71.

He won the gross by a shot from Headfort’s Evan Ship who bogeyed the seventh to turn in one-over, then came home in level par with bogeys at the 13th and 15th cancelled by birdies at the 11th and 18th holes.

Castle’s Nicholas Armstrong won the nett with a 71 off one, edging out Fermoy five-handicapper Richard Crean on a countback.

Out in level as he bogeyed the third but birdied the sixth, Armstrong dropped a shot at the 11th but birdied the 13th and 14th before making a double-bogey at the 15th hole for a one-over-par round.

Crean birdied the first and fourth but after bogeys at the second, fifth, sixth and ninth, he came home in just three-over following bogeys at the 10th, 13th and 18th to shoot 76 for his nett 75.
