There was a huge surprise on Sunday evening when an unlikely winner of the Wyndham Championship golf in North Carolina triggered celebrations over 3000 miles away in Galway.

According to BoyleSports, an anonymous punter in the county struck a €20 each-way bet in a BoyleSports shop last week on American Jim Herman, ranked number 318 in the world, to win the latest event on the PGA Tour.

The Ohio native, reported to be a regular golfing partner of President Donald Trump, started the event as massive 500/1 outsider.

He looked to be justifying his mammoth odds as he was close to missing the halfway cut on Friday, but rounds of 61 and 63 on Saturday and Sunday completed a stunning turnaround and saw him win the tournament by one stroke.

Little did he know how much the victory was welcomed in Galway, where the punter was able to swap their betting slip for a jaw-dropping €13,460.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “This was a shock we would never have predicted, but somehow one of our knowledgeable golf customers in Galway saw it coming. We have to hand it to them for an incredible pick out and wish them luck splashing out with their reward of €13,460.”
