Irish bow out as "North" champion Edwards-Hill reaches quarters in Seville

Rowan Lester, Eanna Griffin and Matthew McClean bowed out in the first round but reigning North of Ireland champion Arron Edwards-Hill has a chance to add the Spanish Amateur Open title to his bulging trophy cabinet.

The English raider beat Germany’s Brandon Dietzel 6 and 5 and the Netherlands’ Nordin Van Tilburg 5/4 to set up a quarter-final clash with his compatriot James Cooper at Real Club de Golf Sevilla.

It was a disappointing day for Irish hopes as Lester fell 4 and 2 to Van Tilburg and the other two Irishmen to make the cut fell at the last.

McClean lost 1 up to Portugal’s Pedro Lencart as Griffin fell by the same margin to Italy’s Andrea Romano.

Romano now faces England’s Maxwell Martin for a place in the semi-finals with the winner to take on Portugal’s Daniel Costa or the German Jannik De Bruyn .

Edwards-Hill, who beat Peter O’Keeffe 2 and 1 in the final of the “North” last July and went on to win the Faldo Junior Series Europe title, must get past Cooper if he’s to face the winner of the all Spanish clash between Jose Luis Ballester and Alvaro Mueller-Baumgart in the last four.
