Griffin and Moran quick out of the gate in Portuguese Amateur

Castle’s Robert Moran and Waterford’s Eanna Griffin made fast starts in the Portuguese International Amateur Championship

The Irish duo are just one shot behind a quintet of leaders after opening with four-under 68s at Montado Hotel & Golf Resort.

Moran made six birdies and Griffin went bogey-free, leaving them in a 17-man logjam for sixth-place behind Portugal’s Lucas Lopes Azinheiro, Finland’s Jaapo Jämsä, Germany’s Luc Breuer and English duo Sam Broadhurst and Thomas Plumb.

Newlands’ Jack McDonnell shot 73, Rory Williamson and Paul Coughlan a brace of 76s, Michael Young a 77 and Aaron Marshall a 78.

The top 40 and ties after 54 holes will qualify for the final round on Saturday.
