Malahide's Alison Taylor continued her hot run of form when she opened with a five-under 70 to take a four-stroke lead in the Senior Women's Open at Royal St David's.

She closed with a five-under 70 to finish fourth behind Pat Doran in the Irish Senior Women’s Open at Carlow last week and continued that trend in Wales, carding seven birdies in a superb opening effort.

England’s Paula Carver and Jo Ashmore, American Lara Tennant and Wales’ Jane Rees shot one-under 74s to lead the chasing pack with Ireland’s Laura Webb, the defending champion, just seven shots off the pace after an opening 77.

Sheena McElroy shot 79, Gertie McMullen and Mary MacLaren carded 80s and Kate Evans a six-over 81.
